The Law and Security Officer program offers optional firearm safety training as well as training to help obtain a security license under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005 (PSISA).
As a Law & Security Officer program graduate, you will qualify for positions such as: Security Guard, Armored Car Guard, Bodyguard, Bouncer, Commissionaire, Night Watchman/Woman, and Preboarding Security Guard.

You will learn about the Canadian Justice System, community policing, private security patrol procedures, policing practices and theories, and CPR and First Aid; you will be equipped with all the necessary skills you need to succeed in the field of your choice.
Students enrolled in the program receive:

Crisis Intervention and Conflict Management
In this course students are introduced to the theories and concepts surrounding conflict, conflict management and resolution, crisis identification, and crisis intervention.
Our Career Management program introduces students to the strategies and components of an effective job search, including self-marketing and awareness, skills inventory, job search tools and the job market. The Career Management course is delivered by our on-campus Career Services Team who are there throughout the job search to assist and mentor students towards achieving their ultimate goal of employment in their field of study.
Our Team of Career Services Professionals maintain relationships in their communities with key employers and organizations that recognize the value triOS graduates have to offer. The skills learned throughout Career Management at triOS will continue to serve students in their job search as they navigate their new careers.
Communications and Interpersonal Skills
This is a two-part course that provides students with the communication skills, both oral and written, that they will need and use in the workforce on a daily basis.
In Part 1, students learn effective interpersonal communication skills for managing personal and work relationships, for gaining voluntary compliance, for interacting with and participating in groups, and for managing conflicts.
Part 2 focuses on police memo and letter writing, police note taking and reports, and oral presentations and workshops.
Community policing has as its central tenet, the development of police-community partnerships and specific strategies that emphasize crime prevention and problem solving. In the past, police departments asked the community for support, but now the police increasingly ask the public for assistance. This assistance takes many forms, such as corporations and businesses providing financial support for police initiatives, citizens volunteering to staff community police offices, crime prevention programs, and victim services. This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of the issues and challenges faced by Canadian police services and communities as they attempt to develop partnerships to respond to and prevent crime and social disorder.
CPR and First Aid
Upon successful completion of this course, students will achieve the St. John's Ambulance Standard Level First Aid and Level C CPR.
Criminal Justice in Canada
In this course, students examine the Canadian Criminal Justice System and its issues and become familiar with the Canadian Charter of Rights and the Criminal Code. Topics covered include the structure and operation of the criminal justice system including models of criminal justice, examples of crimes, Uniform Crime Reports, law enforcement services, court procedures, and correctional services.
Criminal Investigations, Forensics, and Evidence
This course introduces students to the Criminal Investigation process, forensics, and physical evidence. Topics include basic investigative principles and concepts; the importance and use of police discretion; the role of the patrol officer in preliminary investigation; procedures for validating a complaint; procedures involved in crime scene protection; evidence skills for police;
an introduction to forensic science; the collection, preservation, evidentiary value, analysis, and continuity of physical evidence; and the investigation of sudden death.
Courtroom Procedures and Testimony
Focusing on courtroom procedures and testimony, this course provides students with the tools for presenting a case in court. Topics covered include the procedures for bringing an accused to court, the trial, disposition, appeal, classification of offenses, court jurisdiction, bail, interim release, consequences of breeches, rights of the accused, and the duty of the Crown, jury and Ministry of Justice.
Diversity & First Nations People
This course will provide students with a comprehensive overview of the issues and challenges faced by Canadian Police Services in dealing with diversity and multiculturalism. The course addresses a number of issues including stereotyping, prejudice; the basic concepts of diversity, multiculturalism and human rights focusing on the relationship between law enforcement and the diverse communities in Canada. The course also addresses a number of social, legal and ethical issues related to diversity and First Nations Peoples.
Fitness and Lifestyle Management
This course provides students with fitness and lifestyle knowledge and skills and encourages students to take personal responsibility for their health and well-being. Students will develop a personalized diet and exercise program. Focus will also be on stress and in particular those stresses that are commonly encountered in law enforcement.
Interviewing and Interrogation
This course guides students through the pitfalls and hazards of investigative interviewing, and provides a solid legal and practical foundation for the development of interviewing skills. Often the most valuable and most elusive skills a police officer can develop are those related to the collection of witness information. Frequently, the most important evidence in a criminal case comes in the form of oral testimony; but oral evidence is also the most vulnerable to damage at the pre-trial stage. Memories fade, stories change, and willing witnesses sometimes lose their appetite for disclosure. The collection and preservation of critical evidence at the earliest possible stage depends on thorough and careful police work. Even more sensitive is the evidence of the accused - it must be collected in compliance with constitutional rights to be of any value to the prosecution.
Introduction to Policing
This course provides students with an introduction to the Canadian Constitution, Canadian Politics, the government, how laws are created and implemented, and the concepts of public administration including issues such as government regulation, deregulation and privatization. As well, students will be provided with a general introduction to policing in Canada. This will include an overview of how Police Services operate; discipline, first impressions, professionalism and the types of daily activities police officers will be faced with. Students will learn of the hierarchy of rank within various police services and the rank structure.
Officer Safety and Protecting the Public
This course introduces students to additional aspects of policing and crime prevention. Topics covered include patrol and general duty policing, police use of force, high-risk police work, crime response, and basic patrol procedures for private security professionals.
Private Security Patrol Procedures
In this course students will be instructed in the fundamental aspects of patrol procedures that security professionals may encounter during their security career. Students will look at the common areas that are patrolled and the procedures that take place to secure these premises; additionally, they will discuss crime and prevention.
Police Powers and Authority
Using a problem solving approach, this course provides students with basic information about arrests, search and seizure, release and charging an offender.
Provincial Statutes/ Offences
In this course students become familiar with the interpretation and application of Provincial Statutes, common offences and the involvement of non-police agencies. A number of statutes including the Provincial Offences Act, Family Law Act, Liquor License Act, Mental Health Act, Landlord and Tenant, Trespass to Property Act, Coroner’s Act, Game and Fish Act, Blind Persons Act, Environmental Act, and Labour Standards Act are examined.
This Microsoft Word course is created for students to build and validate the skills businesses need to succeed in today's information economy. It also provides students with the skills and knowledge they need to use Microsoft Word effectively in all aspects of their personal and professional lives. Word is the world's most popular word processing software. Learning how to create, edit, format and print documents, enhance work with formatting, use bullets and numbering, add simple borders, tables, headers/footers, organizing data columns, and styles, are the foundational skills needed in preform in many positions. This course is computer intensive and demands basic computer proficiency and a basic understanding of word processing software. The course combines lecture/demonstration by an instructor with readings, trainings, projects, and a final exam for students to work on in a simulation-based environment. Students are expected to ensure they meet proficiency requirements for working in this environment.
