Want to Land a Job Right After Graduation? Here’s How One Specialist Makes It Happen!
September 9th, 2024
My name is Brittany Chung, and I’ve been an Employment Specialist at triOS College for two years. In this role, my primary responsibility is to support students in finding internships and helping them with job searches after graduation.
At triOS, we offer a wide range of support to help students succeed in their career journeys. We start with résumé reviews, mock interviews, and provide insight into the labor market, including statistical data.
Additionally, we connect students with networking opportunities, encouraging them to network independently. We also coordinate and set up interviews, offering career counselling and building the confidence students need to venture into the workforce.
Typically, we connect students with our network of employers. We also equip them with research and job-searching skills to help them find opportunities that match their interests and needs. Our role involves actively reaching out to employers on their behalf and encouraging students to attend various events.
Being ready for hands-on experience is crucial for students. We look for key qualities such as flexibility in hours, willingness to work with others, optimism, and an eagerness to learn. Overall, students need to be ready to complement a company positively.
In our one-on-one sessions, I meet with students to discuss their location, interests, schedule, and career goals. Based on this information, I connect them with employers or hosts who have previously worked with our students. If these connections don’t lead to immediate results, we work together to create a research list, and I conduct outreach on their behalf. Sometimes, students take part in the outreach process too, depending on what makes them feel most comfortable.
Mock interviews play a big role in our support process. We provide students with practice questions, answers, and videos, offering on-the-spot feedback. This includes tips on body language, verbal communication, and what to do and avoid in an interview. These mock interviews are incredibly beneficial for building student confidence and improving their interview performance.
Career fairs are another significant aspect of our program. We bring in numerous employers to connect with our graduates and interns, providing them with opportunities to make strong first impressions. Outside of career fairs, students can rely on Employment Specialists like myself for referrals and connections. Additionally, we always recommend attending external networking events to help students explore further opportunities.
With the right motivation and confidence, students will land a job in their field. It’s essential that when enrolling in a program, students are passionate about the program rather than viewing it as a time-passing endeavor with hopes of finding a job later. Good things come to those who put in the work, and I firmly believe that passion and effort are key to success in any career path.
