July 11th, 2023
With a background in software development, graphic design, and web development, Doug Jasper brings a wealth of knowledge to students in our technology programs. After graduating from the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Doug worked for 13 years in software development. As the popularity of the web began to grow, he returned to school and upgraded his knowledge through community education courses in web development and graphic design. Following this, he began working in graphic design an advertising. His interest in working with computers and with people drew him to teaching, and when an opportunity to teach came along, he attended Vancouver Community College and completed the Train the Trainer program to refine the skills he needs to teach students. Since then, Doug has been teaching for 23 years.
Doug says that Mobile and Web Development are careers of lifelong learning. While he continuously makes use of online resources to stay up to date with current industry trends, he encourages students to do the same and often incorporates new trends and changes in the classroom to better prepare them for their careers. According to Doug, to succeed in this field, a student not only needs to work hard but also develop strong problem solving skills as that is what the industry is all about. He also notes that while technology will constantly change and evolve, core concepts including logical thinking and design skills will always remain important. For those interested in a career in technology, Doug says that there are a wide variety of positions available that provide a niche that everyone can fit into.
