I wanted to start living life – Loren’s Story

July 9th, 2024

While taking a pre-university course at Humber College, injuries from a car accident prevented Loren from completing her program. After having children, she decided to go back to school and enrolled in an electronics engineering program at Devry College. Having had three children with special needs that required much of her attention, she was forced to switch to a business program and graduated with a diploma in Business Information Systems management. However, another accident and some severe health issues left her with chronic pain for over 20 years.
Wanting to live life rather than simply existing within it, Loren wanted to rejoin the workforce in a role that could accommodate her needs, utilize her many acquired skills and support her family. Knowing the government had plans in the works that would ultimately affect disabled members in the system, she began researching programs to see if she could find a career that fit her criteria rather then having a government agency simply place her in a job just to get her off support. During her research, Loren felt a position in healthcare would check off all the boxes she was looking to fill. Focusing on this goal, Loren came across the Medical Office Assistant program at triOS College. The strong job placement percentage and the fact it was a diploma program she would be able to complete in a relatively short period of time coupled with her love of helping others and her personal experience with her own health and that of her family made for an easy decision. Loren also felt that the program would open many doors for her and could offer a variety of positions for which she would be well-qualified and trained.
“When I made my choice to get further training, I considered several issues: My physical and mental health, my financial needs, my skill set, my age, and a number of other elements. I needed a program that I could complete in less than a year and provided me with a diploma along with the opportunity to excel which would give me even the slightest positive edge that would combat the number of negatives I had stacked against me. I researched, and was accepted to several institutions; however, I was continuously brought back to triOS. When I saw that all my boxes were checked with the offered program, seeing the placement percentage for graduates put the cherry on top of the cake.”
In the classroom, she found her instructors patient, supportive, and open to questions from students. She felt that they respected students and their abilities and went above and beyond to help students understand the material.
After graduation, Loren applied for a role at a leading community healthcare provider and was hired on the spot. Now working as a Care Coordinator, Loren applies the knowledge and skills she learned in the classroom to her work each day and credits the skills she acquired as the reason she was offered the job. She plans to apply to become an instructor at triOS, but for now, Loren is thrilled to have a career that allows her to make a difference in the lives of others.
